With the epic OT win tonight, 96-86, the Bulls have all but clinched the #1 seed in the East and are in great shape for the overall #1 seed in the NBA for the second straight season. While DRose was completely ineffective coming back tonight, Tom Thibodeau trusted his bench and they delivered.
Kyle Korver was serving up habanero hot sauce from downtown, splashing 5 of his 6 3-point shots tonight, including the final dagger in OT; meanwhile Taj Gibson took it to the melting man, LeBron James, who once again disappeared in the 4th quarter and OT. Missing his last jump shot and one of his two free throws, he set up Watson’s tying 3 with 2.2 seconds remaining in regulation.
The Bulls have a 4 game lead, and 3 game lead in the loss column over the Heat with 7 games remaining (5 against below .500 teams, and one road game against Indiana and Miami). The Heat have 9 games left, but have now lost any potential tiebreak to the Bulls, who even if they lose next week in Miami will have a tie at 2-2 on the season series. In the event they have the same overall record, the tiebreaker is division record. The Bulls have only lost one game against divisional opponents this year, cementing over any chance Miami may have. However, it’s worth noting the Heat would have to go 9-0 while the Bulls go 3-4 to close the season to obtain the #1 seed in the East.
